When the kids got strep when Nellie was born Kathy called that morning to tell us that when she gave Sadie her medicine that morning that she noticed Sadie had some read spots kind of like a rash on her tummy. I told her we would check when she came to see the baby and by that point they were very raised and swollen like big hives. Eli took her into the Dr. and they said it was most likely a reaction to her antibiotic penicillin and said that we shouldn't give her penicillin again. She seemed to do okay but still had symptoms for the next week or so which they said was pretty normal if they kept showing up for a bit. But then we got to Missouri and they were still showing up so we took her back in, they said the same thing but then after 6-7 weeks went by and she was still waking up hives and even swelling on her face. We took her in again and we started keeping a food journal and everything nothing connected to the hives other than the antibiotics so we have kept her away from penicillin entirely since then. Sometimes she does still get hives and we are beginning to wonder if since it doesn't seem to be a food allergy if maybe there is also a connection with something in the air? It seems to be pretty seasonal or possibly even stress related. We will be taking her into and allergists hopefully soon to get to the bottom of it all!
This is a picture of her hives 7 weeks after the penicillin. It wasn't always this bad and hasn't been this bad since.
